Are You Jellin’?

chanel tan canvas flatsSince we’ve been reliving my school days in fashion lately — from leggings to skinny jeans and beyond — I figured this day would come: Jellies are back! But not back soon enough for me. During last week’s torrential rains, I was wishing I had something stylish and water resistant to put on my feet while I gingerly waded through the flooded streets of New York City. (It was as if my two feet fell in line behind Noah’s other animals… two by two…) Only after the city dried out did I venture beyond the ‘hood to pick up a pair of these adorable Marc Jacobs jelly mouse flats — speaking of all God’s creatures — in smoky gray. They were the perfect mix of middle school memories and my favorite MJ shoes ever!

VENDREDI WRAP-UP

-Notes of Barry Lyndon and Goya were apparent in Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2011 show (right) as promised, but also referencing legendary style icon the Marchesa Luisa Casati, one would imagine flame-haired, kohl-eyed girls walking leopards on diamond leads wearing nothing but a fur coat and strands of pearls in various lengths, accompanied by gold-plated slaveboys… While McQueen delivered some drama, it wasn’t quite to the level of La Casati extremes.  While he showed a number of dazzling evening dresses and some smartly tailored suits, this collection didn’t elicit the eye popping and jaw dropping reactions that McQueen presentations are famous for.

-Karl Lagerfeld’s collection for Chanel showed models with lots of bangles on their wrists, lots of chains around their necks and lots of high hemlines.  Whether in short skirts, dresses, or short shorts (most notably the black, sequined tap pants), Chanel gals will be showing off their gams next spring!  Also interesting were the “tulle-covered denim” pieces and the stripey, minidresses. PARIS FASHION WEEK

lanvin-John Galliano sent his models out again with thick, black strips for eyebrows. I use the same effect with black tape on my dolls to give them emotion, but I think my dolls would look pretty sad after seeing many of the looks from this collection. Similar to his show for Dior, Galliano opened up with some rather drab suits, though this time they were white instead of grey, and were slimmer and more fitted than the Dior versions. He then sent out some nicely draped, rainbow-colored day dresses, followed by some beaded frocks that weren’t as fun. Next up were some beige pieces jazzed up with some gold lame skirts and gigantic flower brooches. His evening dresses were nice, but Stephen Jones’ huge, amazing, sculptural hats accompanying them added some much needed drama.

-The Chloe team delivered a cute, modish collection, but the house is desperately missing Phoebe Philo. We’ll see what happens when Paulo Melim from Marni takes over… Should be interesting. Read the rest of this entry »
